Iwobi Reaches 100 Super Eagles Caps in Portugal Friendly

Alex Iwobi became Nigeria's fourth player to reach 100 international appearances during a Wednesday friendly against Portugal, receiving a commemorative plaque.
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi achieved a career milestone on Wednesday, earning his 100th cap for Nigeria's Super Eagles in a friendly match against Portugal in Leiria. The 30-year-old received a commemorative plaque marking the occasion during the match. Nigeria lost the encounter 2-1.
Iwobi's achievement places him in an exclusive group of Nigerian footballers. He becomes the fourth player to reach the 100-appearance mark, joining former captain Joseph Yobo, former goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, and current captain Ahmed Musa. Each of these players reached this milestone through years of consistent service to the national team.
The midfielder made his Super Eagles debut in October 2015 in a friendly against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, he has represented Nigeria across more than a decade of international football. In October 2017, Iwobi scored a memorable goal against Zambia at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, a moment he has identified as significant in his national team journey.
Speaking on his achievement, Iwobi expressed satisfaction with his service to Nigeria, noting that he remains proud to wear the national colours. He acknowledged that despite his long international career, winning major tournament medals—including African Cup of Nations or World Cup honours—has eluded him. The midfielder noted he selected Nigeria over representing England at youth level, a decision he has not regretted.
