Keyamo Urges Airlines to Avoid Fare Hikes Amid Fuel Crisis

On April 16, 2026, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development in Nigeria, addressed airline operators regarding the significant rise in Jet A1 fuel prices, which have increased by 300% to over N3,300 per liter. He acknowledged the operational challenges faced by airlines due to this spike and appealed to them to refrain from hiking airfares or suspending flight operations.

Keyamo emphasized that such actions would impose significant hardships on travelers, potentially depress demand for air travel, and disrupt the economy by undermining public confidence and logistics networks. He recognized the critical role of aviation in national trade, security, and economic integration.

To address these concerns, an emergency stakeholders' meeting is scheduled for April 22, 2026, in Abuja to find sustainable solutions to the crisis. Keyamo's intervention follows threats from airline operators to halt flights due to the soaring fuel prices.
