Jide Kosoko's "Esugbayi Eleko" Brings Lagos Monarch's Legacy to Nollywood

Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko, also known as Jide Babs, has released a historical drama film titled "Esugbayi Eleko," depicting the resistance of Lagos monarch Oba Esugbayi Eleko against British colonial authority. The movie, approved by the National Film and Video Censors Board in August 2025, portrays the monarch's exile in 1925 and his alliance with nationalist leader Herbert Macaulay and market woman leader Alimotu Pelewura.

Kosoko, drawing from his royal background, aims to authentically showcase the cultural legacy of Oba Esugbayi Eleko through language, costume, and set design. Industry experts believe the film could pave the way for historical storytelling in Nollywood and attract international recognition.
