Jorge Jesus Explains Ronaldo's Bench Role in Portugal Win

Jorge Jesus, the manager of the Portugal National Team, clarified that Cristiano Ronaldo remained on the bench during the 2-1 UEFA Nations League win over Norway on September 28 because the match situation did not warrant his introduction. Ronaldo, 41, was fit and listed among the substitutes, but Jesus chose to start Gonçalo Ramos, who scored the winning goal.

Initially, Jesus intended to bring Ronaldo into the game but altered his decision as the match progressed. He stated, “I felt it wasn’t the right time to put him in the game,” emphasizing that the choice was tactical and unrelated to Ronaldo's fitness.

Jesus had previously discussed the plan with Ronaldo, agreeing to introduce him for the final 30 minutes. However, Ramos' performance, which included a goal and another disallowed, influenced the decision.

Portugal's victory keeps them at the top of their Nations League group, and Jesus indicated that Ronaldo might return to the starting line-up for the next match against Denmark.
