JPMorgan Gets CBN Nod to Launch Nigerian Merchant Bank by End-2026

JPMorgan Chase has received approval-in-principle from Nigeria's central bank to establish a merchant bank, depositing N50 billion to meet capital requirements.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has granted approval-in-principle to JPMorgan Chase, clearing a significant regulatory hurdle for the establishment of JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited. To satisfy minimum capital requirements for a nationally licensed merchant bank, the American financial services firm has already deposited N50 billion, equivalent to roughly $38 million.

Operations are targeted to commence before the end of 2026, though sources suggest final regulatory clearance may extend into early 2027. The timeline is described as tight, given that full central bank approval is expected sometime between late 2026 and the opening months of 2027.

Outstanding regulatory and operational requirements must still be completed by JPMorgan before receiving its final license and commencing banking activities. This development marks JPMorgan's formal re-entry into Nigeria's financial sector following decades of presence through predecessor entities.

Chase Manhattan, its historical predecessor, opened a Lagos branch in 1961 and subsequently established a representative office in 1982. A merchant bank license would represent substantial expansion beyond representative status into full-scale banking operations.

Nigeria's existing banking landscape faces important implications from this move. Competitors such as Access Bank, Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa, and FirstBank currently operate in merchant banking and compete for foreign investment and high-value corporate transactions.

JPMorgan's entry is expected to intensify competition in attracting international capital and executing major business deals, potentially reshaping how Nigerian lenders compete for foreign-backed projects and cross-border financing mandates.
