Adeyanju Testifies in El-Rufai Phone-Tapping Case

Deji Adeyanju, a human rights lawyer, testified in the Federal High Court in Abuja regarding the case against former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, which involves allegations of phone tapping. The court, presided over by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, replayed a controversial interview El-Rufai gave on February 13 during an Arise Television program, where he claimed that phone conversations involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu were intercepted.

Adeyanju confirmed that the video accurately reflected the events of that day and stated that El-Rufai had made claims about someone intercepting calls. The prosecution presented a subpoena for Adeyanju to testify, and the defense raised no objections to the admission of the video evidence.

Adeyanju asserted that the federal government intended to arrest El-Rufai upon his return to Nigeria, referencing ongoing investigations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) into allegations of corruption against him. The trial is set to continue on June 23.
