Senate Emergency Session Amid Electoral Act Protests

The Nigerian Senate convened an emergency plenary session in response to widespread protests against the controversial Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The protests erupted following the removal of a clause requiring real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The urgent sitting came just a day after the bill's passage amid intense criticism from civil society groups, labor unions, opposition parties, and youth movements. Demonstrators gathered at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards demanding electoral accountability and digital result transmission.

The Senate session, presided over by Senate President Godswil Akpabio, drew a full attendance despite recent changes in the chamber's composition. The session commenced at noon, focusing on discussions related to the Electoral Act amendment as public anger continued to escalate.

The Senate, which now has 106 members following the deaths of Senators Okechukwu Ezea and Godiya Akwashiki, also saw the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as an ambassador-designate. The session was formally announced by Senate President Bola Tinubu via a statement signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo.
