Kaduna, UNICEF Launch Initiative to Promote Breastfeeding

The Kaduna State Government, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), launched the First 1,000 Days Social and Behaviour Change Initiative for Nutrition on Tuesday, marking the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week. The initiative aims to promote optimal nutrition from conception until a child is two years old, emphasizing exclusive breastfeeding and improved maternal and child health.

Hon. Umma K. Ahmed, the Commissioner for Health, stated that this year's World Breastfeeding Week theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” highlights the importance of proven interventions for child survival and development.

She noted that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months is crucial for providing necessary nutrients, protecting against diseases, and supporting brain development. Ahmed urged various stakeholders, including families and healthcare providers, to support nursing mothers.

Mrs. Chinwe Ezeife, UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, emphasized that breastfeeding is a vital investment in human capital development and that the initiative aims to reinforce effective interventions.
