Kenya's Ministry of Health Reports Four New Ebola Cases

On October 18, Kenya's Ministry of Health confirmed four new cases of Ebola. The fourth case involved a male relative of the first patient, who died on October 5 after arriving from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on October 3.
The relative had been in quarantine since October 6. The three other cases involved health workers, two men aged 35 and 32, and a woman aged 29, who had treated the first patient on October 3 and 4 and had been quarantined since October 9.
All four patients developed symptoms while in quarantine and were diagnosed with the virus. This outbreak marks the first known instances of local transmission in Kenya.
The Ministry reported that 128 of the 130 identified contacts had been traced and quarantined, exceeding the 85 percent global benchmark for effective contact tracing. The second and third confirmed patients are stable and responding to treatment.
There are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.
