He insisted that his intention was not to insult Nigerians but to humorously highlight the differences in English proficiency across African countries. This clarification followed a viral video that contrasted Kenya's education system with Nigeria's, suggesting differences in spoken English.

The comments sparked widespread online reactions, particularly in light of a recent statement made by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu during his visit to Bayelsa State, which referenced living conditions in various African countries, including Kenya. Ruto expressed hope that no diplomatic issues would arise from the misunderstanding.
