King Sunny Ade Celebrates 80th Birthday with Tributes

King Sunny Ade, born Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye in 1946 in Osogbo, celebrated his 80th birthday on September 22. Tributes poured in for the 'King of Juju', recognizing his musical career and social impact.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu referred to him as one of Africa's most celebrated entertainers, while Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola described him as a respected music maestro who has spread joy through music. Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa honored KSA as a distinguished son of Ondo Kingdom, promoting culture and values through his music.

KSA's career began in Lagos after leaving Ondo, where he initially joined Moses Olaiya’s Federal Rhythm Dandies. He gained international acclaim with his Juju Music tour in North America and Europe by 1982 and received a Grammy nomination for his 1983 album, Synchro System.

His music also featured in Hollywood films during the 1980s. Although he has retreated from public life, KSA remains a revered figure in Nigerian music.
