The match was intended to be the first European top-flight league game played on American soil at the Hard Rock Stadium. The cancellation led to protests, with Villarreal officials refusing to play the first 15 seconds of their next league game.

Barcelona coach, Hansi Flick, admitted the squad's decision to play abroad, while Real Madrid captain, Dani Carvajal, criticized the plan as tarnishing competitiveness.
