Lagos Stakeholders Push for Building Safety Collaboration

At a conference organized by the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) in Amuwo Odofin Local Government, stakeholders in Nigeria's built environment urged for enhanced collaboration among government agencies, professionals, developers, and communities to prevent building collapses in Lagos. Dr. Austin Otuoke, the conference chairman, highlighted the theme “Building Lagos by Synergy,” stressing the collective responsibility of all stakeholders, including architects, engineers, and builders, in ensuring proper building design and maintenance.

He pointed out the shortage of skilled artisans as a significant challenge to construction quality. Builder Chubike Okafor, the BCPG Local Government Cell coordinator, noted that the initiative was developed over two years and was partly inspired by a recent building collapse at Alakija.

He proposed a platform for residents to report structural defects to facilitate rapid intervention, emphasizing the need for an effective early-warning system. Okafor also addressed flooding issues in Satellite Town, calling for sustainable solutions.
