Lagos Court Orders X Corp to Disclose User Identity

The Lagos High Court in Ikorodu, presided over by Justice Adeniyi Pokanu, ruled on June 5, 2026, that X Corp must disclose the identity of user @_AbiolaPharays, who manipulated a birthday post of law graduate Esther Agboola. Agboola, who celebrated her 25th birthday on January 9, 2026, claimed that the user altered a previous post from January 2025 to mislead the public.

The court found that this manipulation breached Agboola's right to privacy under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution. Agboola was awarded N20 million in general damages for mental anguish and reputational harm caused by the user's actions.

Additionally, the court imposed a conditional N50 million damages against X Corp if it fails to comply with the order to disclose the user's identity. The judgment emphasized the responsibility of social media platforms to protect users' rights and privacy.
