Lagos Government Applauds Fela Kuti's Posthumous Grammy Honor

The Lagos State Government has commended the family of the late Afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, following his posthumous recognition with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Fela made history by becoming the first African artist to receive this prestigious award during the Grammy Special Merit Award ceremony held in Los Angeles on January 31, 2026.

The honor was accepted on behalf of his children - Yeni, Femi, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti. The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr.

Toke Benson Awoyinka, described the recognition as a landmark achievement that reflects Fela's global influence on music and messages. He emphasized the enduring positive cultural impact of Fela's work, which continues to resonate globally.
