Lagos Traders Protest Chinese Retail Expansion Threat

On September 16, traders at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway protested against the alleged expansion of Chinese merchants into the retail sector. They expressed concerns that this development could push Nigerian businesses out of the market.

The protest was suspended following interventions from the leadership of the Traders Association, local government officials, and the police. The traders claimed that Chinese manufacturers and wholesalers were moving beyond supplying goods to local businesses by opening retail outlets, thereby bypassing local middlemen and selling directly to consumers at competitive prices.

Social commentator Martin Beck Nworah highlighted that this shift disrupts the traditional trading structure, making it difficult for Nigerian retailers to compete. A protester warned that if the trend continues, Nigerian traders could lose their businesses within five to six years.

The protest underscored the importance of the relationship between Nigerian traders and their Chinese counterparts, while also calling for a strategy to protect local interests.
