Nigeria Reports 15 Health Workers Infected with Lassa Fever

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported that 15 health workers have been infected with Lassa fever, with two confirmed deaths. This alarming situation has prompted the agency to issue a warning regarding the current epidemic, which typically sees an increase in cases during this period.

The NCDC highlighted significant gaps in infection control protocols, noting that preliminary studies indicate insufficient safety precautions in wards and outpatient clinics. Non-clinical staff, including administrative personnel and cleaners, are also at risk, leading to calls for enhanced protective training programs.

Health officials have emphasized the importance of establishing appropriate isolation units and maintaining a clear referral system to uphold universal safety procedures for all patients, regardless of their diagnosis.
