Nigerian Lawyer Calls for Urgent Healthcare Reform

Ikenna Ahumib, a human rights lawyer, raised concerns about the Nigerian government's inability to adequately reform the healthcare sector, emphasizing that access to healthcare is a fundamental right for every citizen. He stated that the government's failure to cater to citizens' health needs signifies a broader failure.

Ahumib criticized the 2026 national budget, which allocated insufficient funds for healthcare, far below international benchmarks. He noted the significant emigration of Nigerian doctors due to poor remuneration and non-payment of salaries, leading to increased industrial actions.

The healthcare system's inadequacies have resulted in Nigerians traveling abroad for medical treatment, costing the country approximately $550 million annually. He highlighted the dire conditions in hospitals, particularly in Abuja and Owerri, where patients face overcrowding and lack of essential medical equipment.

Ahumib called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to implement comprehensive reforms to restore public confidence in the healthcare system and curb the financial losses associated with medical tourism.
