Lionel Messi is set to bid farewell to the Argentina national team during a match against Benin on October 6, 2026, at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has confirmed that the 39-year-old Messi will be included in the squad specifically for this farewell fixture, following his decision to retire from international football.

This match will conclude Messi's illustrious international career, which has lasted over two decades, during which he has made 207 appearances and scored 125 goals for Argentina. He has also led the national team to significant victories, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024.

AFA president Claudio Tapia stated that Messi deserves a proper farewell in Argentina, and members of the 2022 World Cup-winning squad and their families will also be invited. Messi will not participate in the friendlies against Bolivia on September 30 and Burkina Faso on October 3, making the match against Benin his final appearance in national colors.
