Malami Denies Corruption in Mambila Project Settlement

Abubakar Malami, the former attorney-general of the federation, addressed allegations concerning his involvement in the $200 million settlement related to the Mambila hydropower project and Sunrise Power. In a statement released by his special assistant on media, Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami rejected claims that his actions were driven by a promise of personal financial gain.

He emphasized that the tribunal's findings suggested a common intention between him and Adesanya to secure a favorable settlement for Sunrise at Nigeria's expense, but he maintained that no evidence linked him to any financial benefit. Malami noted that the controversy surrounding the settlement dates back to 2003, long before his appointment as attorney-general, and involved multiple administrations.

He stated that the federal government had been dealing with Sunrise's claims, which impeded financing discussions for the Mambila project. Malami confirmed that President Buhari did not approve the payment and that he instructed legal counsel to resist Sunrise's attempts to enforce the settlement terms against Nigeria.
