Edo State Tanker Explosion Claims Lives and Injures Many

A petrol tanker explosion occurred at Oluku along the Benin-Lagos Road in Edo State, reportedly leaving many feared dead and injuring 10 others. The accident took place around 4 a.m. on Thursday when the tanker overturned while attempting a U-turn near Oluku market, spilling petrol onto the road and into drainage channels.

Residents and passers-by gathered to collect the spilled fuel before security personnel arrived. A witness reported that the tanker owner arranged for another truck to recover the remaining petrol, but the operation ended in disaster when the tanker caught fire.

The inferno engulfed people at the scene, destroyed nearby shops, and burned several vehicles. Some victims were burnt beyond recognition, and emergency responders evacuated the injured to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for treatment.

The Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, was seen supervising emergency operations at the hospital's accident and emergency and burns units.
