Nigerian Migrants Feared Dead as Boat Capsizes off Libyan Coast

A tragic incident unfolded off the Libyan coast as a rubber boat carrying 55 people, including Nigerian migrants, capsized in the Central Mediterranean Sea near Zuwara. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that at least 53 migrants, including two babies, are feared dead or missing.

The boat, which set off from Zawiya, began taking on water and capsized after six hours. The exact destination of the migrants and the circumstances leading to the tragedy are still under investigation.

The survivor recounted that the vessel was carrying migrants from several African countries seeking refuge. The IOM has raised concerns about the dangers faced by migrants attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean, especially during severe winter weather conditions.

Additionally, the IOM highlighted the risks of migrants being held captive, subjected to torture, coercion, and ransom payments in Libya. The organization has been involved in supporting the voluntary return of Nigerian migrants to their home country, with 177 individuals assisted in a recent humanitarian flight.
