Dangote Sues Nigerian Government Over Fuel Import Licenses

The Dangote Group, led by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has initiated a lawsuit against the Nigerian government, specifically targeting the issuance of petrol import licenses to fuel traders. The suit, filed in the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeks to void these licenses, claiming they violate an existing court order that maintains the status quo regarding fuel imports.

This legal action comes amidst a backdrop of ongoing debates in the oil sector about Nigeria's reliance on fuel imports despite the commencement of large-scale local refining at the Dangote refinery, which has a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) recently approved import licenses for six companies, allowing them to bring 720,000 metric tons of petrol into the market.

The lawsuit raises significant concerns about the stability of the market and the potential for monopolistic practices, as Dangote's refinery claims it can meet domestic demand without the need for imports.
