Massive 7.5 Earthquake Strikes Russia’s Far East, Triggers Pacific-Wide Tsunami Alerts

A massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami alerts across the Pacific Rim, including Japan, Hawaii, French Polynesia, and Chile. The shallow quake, occurring 12 miles deep, sent a 16-foot wave crashing and flooding the port, sweeping away a fishing vessel.

Residents in French Polynesia were warned to prepare for a 13-foot wave, while Japan evacuated coastal areas, including workers at the Fukushima nuclear plant. The quake, the strongest in Russia's Far East in years, caused significant damage, with reports of violent shaking and flooding.

Despite the magnitude, scientists noted that the shaking was less intense than expected due to the quake's specific characteristics. Aftershocks continue, with concerns of stronger tremors.
