On Monday morning, a military aircraft operating under registration NGR 931 crashed near Igbokoda's Naval Base in Ondo State after communications with air traffic control were severed. The plane vanished from radar around 9:13 a.m. en route from Benin to Lagos.
Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo disclosed the incident, noting that controllers failed to establish any radio communication with the crew prior to the aircraft's descent. Onboard were 25 passengers alongside seven crew members, as indicated in preliminary data shared by Keyamo.
Following the loss of radio contact, authorities subsequently received word that the aircraft had gone down in the vicinity of Igbokoda's Naval Base. Search and rescue teams have since discovered the wreckage and continue active recovery operations with assistance from pertinent state entities.
This incident constitutes another noteworthy occurrence affecting Nigerian aviation safety. When the military aircraft lost contact, air traffic control personnel immediately took action, notifying relevant authorities after customary communication channels broke down.
The proximity to the Naval Base may provide logistical support for both recovery and subsequent investigation work. Rescue activities remain underway in the Igbokoda vicinity as of recent updates.
The status of occupants and crash circumstances have not yet been disclosed by officials. Keyamo's communications underscored that ongoing investigations are proceeding, with additional information expected to surface following examination of the wreckage and surrounding evidence.
