NUT Threatens Action Against States Over Minimum Wage

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), represented by President Audu T. Amba, has issued a warning to states that have not yet implemented the recently approved minimum wage, indicating a potential mobilization of members against these defaulting states.

During the 19th quadrennial state conference held in Ilorin, NUT's National Social Secretary, Titilop Adebanjo, advised against complacency among union members regarding non-compliant states. Amba expressed appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's efforts to enhance teacher welfare nationwide, while also urging for better economic conditions for teachers.

He noted ongoing security challenges affecting schools, with hopes for improvements by the next academic session. NUT Chairman Comrade Yusuf Agboola commended the state government for regular salary payments and highlighted long-standing welfare concerns, including the implementation of a specific allowance for teachers.

The conference also called for the extension of retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years to retain experienced educators in the system.
