Presidency Criticizes Catholic Bishops; INEC Releases Candidate List

On Saturday, the Presidency rebuked representatives of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria for their behavior during a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, asserting that the bishops are not the sole custodians of the truth regarding the nation's state. The Presidency specifically criticized Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, for publicly revealing details of the closed-door meeting, labeling his comments as inappropriate and a breach of confidentiality.

In a related development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the final list of candidates for the 2027 general elections, concluding months of political uncertainty. Notably absent from this list were former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was presented as a presidential candidate by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Senator Ned Nwoko.
