NLC Demands N1 Million Minimum Wage Amid Economic Strain

Benson Upah, spokesperson for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), stated that the proposed national minimum wage of N100,000 is insufficient for Nigerian workers, who should earn N1 million monthly considering the prevailing economic conditions. Upah's comments were made in response to Kwara State Governor Abdulrazaq's proposal, which he deemed unrealistic.

The NLC highlighted the impact of inflation, the depreciating naira, increased electricity tariffs, and higher fuel prices as factors necessitating a substantial wage increase. Upah noted that the current wage structure significantly falls short of what workers need to cope with rising living costs.

He emphasized that the workforce is a valuable asset to the nation and deserves adequate compensation to ensure economic growth. The debate over worker wages has intensified following the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira by the federal government in July 2024.

The NLC continues to advocate for a wage review amid ongoing negotiations with the government.
