NAICOM clears 43 insurers as recapitalisation push transforms sector

Nigeria's insurance regulator has approved 43 firms meeting new capital rules, marking a major industry overhaul tied to economic growth targets.
The National Insurance Commission has validated that forty-three insurance and reinsurance companies meet newly established minimum capital requirements through a wide-ranging sector overhaul. Rooted in the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act signed by President Bola Tinubu in July 2025, this approval caps off twelve months of compliance work.
Officials describe the achievement as among Nigeria's most substantial structural shifts in financial services since banking consolidation occurred in the early 2000s. Core aims of this recapitalisation initiative include bolstering the sector's capacity to finance economic development, safeguard policyholders, and channel investment toward the government's $1 trillion economy objective for 2030.
Guinea Insurance Plc earned historic recognition by becoming the inaugural firm to breach the N15 billion threshold applicable to non-life insurers, mobilizing approximately N12.6 billion via hybrid capital-raising approaches, as company leadership confirmed. Both NAICOM's top officials and the Nigerian Insurers Association have underscored how vital newsroom participation is to advancing these reforms.
At Lagos-based investiture events for freshly elected leaders of the Nigerian Association of Insurance and Pension Editors, industry figures stressed that stronger media engagement could deepen consumer awareness, restore sectoral confidence, and facilitate implementation of regulatory and organizational changes currently underway. Designed to ensure participating operators sustain sufficient capital bases and assume broader risk portfolios, the recapitalisation structure was created with these benchmarks in mind.
Completion of validation successfully fulfills the statutory mandates embedded in 2025 reform legislation regarding how sector reorganisation must unfold.
