Nigeria's Naira-for-Crude Policy to Combat Fuel Crisis

The Nigerian Presidency, represented by Bola Tinubu and senior special assistant Temitop Ajayi, announced that the Naira-for-crude policy is designed to shield Nigeria from the ongoing fuel crisis caused by the conflict in the Middle East. The policy, approved for launch on October 1, 2024, aims to ensure an uninterrupted supply of petroleum products amid global shortages.

Ajayi highlighted that the conflict, particularly Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, has worsened global economic conditions, yet Nigeria has not faced domestic fuel shortages like other countries. The initiative includes a framework developed by a technical committee chaired by Finance Minister Wale Edun and aims to stabilize the economy while ensuring supply security.

The Dangote Refinery is expected to play a critical role in this strategy, with plans to export refined products to various African countries, enhancing Nigeria's energy independence and economic growth.
