Nasarawa 2027: Zoning Debate Intensifies for Governorship

As the 2027 governorship election approaches in Nasarawa State, the issue of zoning is becoming increasingly significant. Political leaders are divided on whether the governorship should rotate back to Nasarawa West, which last had a governor in Abdullahi Adamu (1999-2007), or remain open to candidates from all districts.

Supporters of zoning argue that it is time for Nasarawa West to regain power after nearly two decades, while opponents cite the absence of constitutional mandates for such a rotation. Since Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999, all three senatorial districts have held the governorship, with Abdullahi Sule from Nasarawa North currently in office since 2019 and re-elected in 2023.

Governor Sule has endorsed Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada from Nasarawa West as his preferred successor, emphasizing the need for the APC governorship ticket to move to that district. This endorsement follows extensive consultations with stakeholders, highlighting the political dynamics at play in the upcoming election.
