NASS Leaders Meet Tinubu to Discuss State Police Initiative

Leaders of the National Assembly (NASS) met with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock, Abuja, shortly after a plenary session resumed following a brief recess. The meeting included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abba, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma.

They arrived at the State House at 3:30 PM and departed approximately 30 minutes later without addressing the press, and the purpose of the meeting was not made public. The National Assembly is set to reconvene on Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM after postponing the earlier resumption date from February 24 to allow committees to conclude the budget defense session.

During an iftar dinner on February 25, Tinubu urged lawmakers to begin constitutional amendments to establish state police as part of efforts to tackle insecurity. He reiterated this appeal to House members on February 27 and emphasized the need for safeguards against abuse by state governors.
