National Assembly Advances AfCFTA Implementation in Nigeria

The National Assembly of Nigeria is moving to domesticate the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, with a commitment to legislative action and enhanced oversight to maximize Nigeria's economic gains from the treaty. Senate President Godswill Akpabio highlighted that the AfCFTA presents a historic opportunity for Africa's economy, noting that mere ratification does not guarantee results.

He stressed the importance of translating the continent's commitment into practical outcomes through legislative strategies. The workshop organized by the National Institute for Legislative Studies, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, aims to deepen lawmakers' understanding of the AfCFTA's eight protocols and Nigeria's obligations.

Abba Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Rabiu Yusuf, Chairman of the House Committee on Treaties, emphasized the necessity of aligning domestic legislation with AfCFTA protocols to protect vulnerable sectors, particularly small businesses. The initiative aims to ensure Nigeria emerges as a leading beneficiary of the continental trade pact.
