National Assembly Pushes for Solid Minerals Funding Reform

The National Assembly has proposed granting the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development a first-line charge status due to the alarming situation where capital releases for the sector in 2025 have hit zero. This development is seen as a major setback for Nigeria's economic diversification agenda.

Imma Sulaiman Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, has requested Senate approval for an upward review of the proposed budget of N134.2 billion for the 2026 fiscal year. Lawmakers have criticized the abysmal capital releases, with Mr.

Dele Alak, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, highlighting that N865.06 billion earmarked for capital expenditure in 2025 remains unallocated. He warned that without guaranteed funding through first-line charge status, the sector would continue to struggle.

Ekong Sampson, Chairman of the Joint Committee, expressed concern over the zero capital release, questioning the viability of ambitious projects embedded in the national budget. The proposed reforms aim to unlock the sector's potential, create jobs, and significantly boost Nigeria's GDP.
