Nigerian Electricity Workers Threaten Nationwide Blackout Over Unmet Demands

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) in Nigeria has given a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government, warning of a potential nationwide blackout if their demands are not met. The workers allege widespread anti-labor practices, wage violations, and job insecurity within the Nigerian electricity supply industry.

They criticize the government for failing to resolve issues such as the implementation of the 2025 national minimum wage act, non-remittance of deductions for taxes and pensions, and the denial of workers' constitutional rights to unionize. The workers also accuse power sector employers of refusing to negotiate and implement collective agreements, leading to prolonged disputes.

The union calls for urgent government intervention to address the crisis and protect workers' rights and interests.
