Nigerian Navy Dismantles Illegal Refinery in Rivers

The Nigerian Navy successfully dismantled an illegal oil refinery in the Ogba Egbema Ndoni area of Rivers State, recovering a significant quantity of stolen crude oil. This operation was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday and was conducted under the Navy's Delta Sentinel maritime security initiative.

The operation involved the Nigerian Navy ship NN Pathfind, which uncovered tampered wellheads belonging to a company, revealing illegal connections and makeshift pipelines used for siphoning crude oil into dugout pits. Commodore Mutalib Raji emphasized the operation's effectiveness in combating crude oil theft and illegal bunkering, which pose economic sabotage risks in the Niger Delta.

In late February, the Navy had previously destroyed three illegal refinery sites, five ovens, and 25 dugout pits in the same region. The ongoing crackdown on oil theft is part of a nationwide effort by the Nigerian Navy to address one of the biggest challenges facing Nigeria's oil industry, which significantly impacts government revenue and the country's ability to meet its oil production targets.
