Nigerian Bar Association Faces Backlash Over Appointment of Ex-Convict as Branch Patron

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is facing backlash for appointing Abdulrasheed Maina, a convicted individual involved in a N2 billion pension fund scam, as a patron of its Garki branch in Abuja. The NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, condemned the appointment, stating it undermines the legal profession's fight against corruption.

The NBA initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Garki branch chairman, Bamidele Ojo, demanding the immediate withdrawal of Maina's appointment. Maina was sentenced to eight years in prison for money laundering by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja.

The NBA emphasized its commitment to upholding professional ethics and the rule of law by disclaiming Maina's appointment and condemning corrupt practices.
