NCAA Criticizes Airlines for 60% Flight Delays in August

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has criticized domestic airlines for not adhering to passenger protection regulations, as approximately 60% of domestic flights in August 2026 were delayed. According to NCAA operational data, out of 7,961 flights, 4,765 were delayed, and 36 flights were canceled.

Michael Achimugu, the director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, stated that airlines are increasingly neglecting their responsibilities to passengers during delays and cancellations. He highlighted that timely information and appropriate care for affected passengers are essential, yet airlines often fail to provide this, leading to confrontations at airports.

Achimugu noted that airline staff frequently leave during crises, forcing NCAA personnel to manage angry passengers. He also expressed concerns about unresolved refund claims, stating that many airlines have not honored their promises regarding faster refunds.

Furthermore, Achimugu accused airlines of improperly determining compensation for passengers affected by overbooking, offering discounts instead of adhering to regulatory requirements.
