Lassa Fever Deaths Surge in Nigeria, NCDC Reports 167 Fatalities

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported a concerning rise in Lassa fever deaths, with 167 fatalities recorded in 2026 as of epidemiological week 13. This marks a significant increase in the case fatality rate, now at 25.2%, compared to 18.5% during the same period in 2025.

The latest report indicates 26 new confirmed cases, a decrease from 51 cases reported the previous week, with a total of 663 confirmed cases and 3,831 suspected cases across 22 states and 93 local government areas. The states most affected include Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Edo, Benue, and Kaduna, which account for 85% of the confirmed cases.

Young adults aged 21-30 are identified as the most affected demographic. The report highlights persistent challenges contributing to the high fatality rate, including late presentation of cases and poor health-seeking behavior.

The NCDC is actively coordinating a national response with partners like UNICEF and MSF to enhance surveillance, contact tracing, and public awareness campaigns.
