NCF Urges Tinubu to Sign Biodiversity Protection Bill

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently sign the Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill into law. This request coincides with World Biodiversity Day 2026, highlighting the mounting threats to Nigeria's biodiversity.

The NCF emphasizes that the bill, which has been pending in the National Assembly, is crucial for providing the legal framework necessary to prosecute wildlife crimes and regulate trade. Dr.

Joseph Onoja, the Director General of NCF, stated that Nigeria ranks 36th globally in biodiversity but is experiencing alarming rates of deforestation and habitat loss. The NCF's call includes a demand for full funding to implement the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and to enforce existing wildlife protection laws.

The foundation stresses the importance of local action in achieving global biodiversity targets and urges citizens to take pride in and protect Nigeria's natural heritage.
