NDCAG Appeals to AGF on Chappal Energies MD's Rights

The Niger-Delta Civil Advocacy Group (NDCAG) has appealed to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, regarding the ongoing detention and prosecution of Ufoma Joseph Immanuel, Managing Director of Chappal Energies. The group expressed concerns about Immanuel's fundamental rights and urged the AGF to ensure his liberty and access to medical care are protected.

NDCAG contended that a commercial dispute involving Immanuel and businessman Adebisi Adebutu should not have been treated as a criminal matter. The group referenced a letter dated September 1, 2026, addressed to President Bola Tinubu, which included signatures from various NDCAG officials across multiple states.

The dispute arose from investment arrangements linked to Chappal Energies and involved issues such as shareholding and financing. NDCAG cited a 2025 Federal Capital Territory High Court order that restrained law enforcement from prosecuting Immanuel and a February 10, 2026, Federal High Court judgment that deemed an EFCC publication against him unjustified, awarding him N5 million in damages.
