NDIC Enhances Claims Process for Prompt Depositor Payouts

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has reiterated its commitment to ensuring prompt access to depositor funds in the event of bank failures, following significant improvements in its claims settlement process. During a town hall meeting in Lagos, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Thompson Oludar emphasized the enhancement of the payout framework to eliminate delays and bolster public confidence in the banking system.

The NDIC has refined its reimbursement procedures to ensure insured depositors are paid as quickly as possible after the closure of financial institutions. Notably, the use of Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) has significantly reduced verification bottlenecks, accelerating the claims process.

Oludar urged depositors to ensure their accounts are properly linked to their BVN to facilitate seamless reimbursements. The NDIC's mandate extends beyond supervision and liquidation, with a core responsibility to protect depositor funds.

The meeting included representatives from the Central Bank of Nigeria, civil society organizations, and academia, discussing best practices to safeguard depositor funds. The NDIC plans to raise the maximum deposit insurance coverage to N5 million for commercial banks and N2 million for microfinance banks.
