NDLEA Presents Nigeria's Drug Control Progress at UN Assembly

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) presented Nigeria's drug control transformation at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA. The statement was delivered by NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brig-Gen. Mohamed Marwa (Rtd), represented by Secretary Shadrach Haruna.
Marwa outlined the agency's evolution from an enforcement-focused organization to an integrated, intelligence-led body addressing sophisticated trafficking networks and illicit drug economies. From January 2025 to September 2026, the NDLEA recorded 38,242 arrests, seized over 5.8 million kilograms of illicit drugs valued at over N2.5 trillion, and secured 6,232 convictions.
Additionally, more than 16,303 individuals received counseling, treatment, or rehabilitation. Marwa emphasized the importance of dismantling major traffickers and highlighted the Alternative Development initiative in Ondo State, which supports residents transitioning from illicit cannabis cultivation to legitimate agriculture.
He also mentioned the NDLEA’s Drug Integrity Test and Visa E-Administration System as digital tools enhancing public administration.
