New U.S. Tariffs of 10% Take Effect After Court Ruling

New tariffs initiated by President Donald Trump, set at 10%, will take effect following a Supreme Court ruling that affirmed his authority to impose such tariffs under the 1977 law. This ruling, which was decided by a 6-3 vote, struck down previous tariffs deemed arbitrary.

The new tariffs will apply to $1.2 trillion worth of imports annually, representing 34% of total goods imported into the United States. Erica York, Vice President of the Tax Foundation, estimates that the average tax increase per U.S. household will amount to $1,000 by 2025.

The tariffs are expected to remain in place for 150 days unless extended by Congress. Wendi Cutler, a former U.S. trade official, warned that Trump's actions could lead to retaliatory measures from trade partners, while Jamieson Greer, a U.S. trade representative, noted that the tariffs would remain in force despite the court ruling.
