CEWHIN Urges Leaders to Combat Violence Against Women

The Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN) has called on traditional rulers and religious leaders in Ogun State to intensify their efforts to eliminate harmful cultural practices that violate the rights and dignity of women and girls. This appeal was made during a town hall meeting focused on preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG) in the Ogun East Senatorial District, held in Ijebu Ode.

CEWHIN, supported by the Ford Foundation, emphasized the need for collective action to challenge harmful belief systems that perpetuate discrimination. The organization highlighted that poverty, ignorance, and lack of access to education are significant factors fueling violence against women.

CEWHIN recommended grassroots education and economic empowerment programs for women, alongside stricter enforcement of existing laws designed to protect them. Alhaji Amuludun Jamiu Babaloja cautioned against the wholesale rejection of cultural values, arguing that some traditions are beneficial to society.

He advised young people to conduct proper background checks before marriage and to treat women with love and respect.
