Nigerian stock market closed August with N6.62 trillion in year-to-date turnover and a 56.9% gain, driven by frontier market reclassification.

During August, Nigeria's stock exchange saw equity trades totaling roughly N640 billion, lifting year-to-date turnover to N6.62 trillion by month's end. This figure marks a jump from the N5.98 trillion logged in July, even as profit-taking and price corrections affected the market.

At 244,199.39 points, the All-Share Index closed August with a year-to-date return standing at 56.93 percent. On August 31, a pivotal development occurred when FTSE Russell confirmed Nigeria's shift from unclassified status to frontier market designation.

This reclassification sparked renewed buying across heavyweight equities, propelling the market to gain approximately N1.91 trillion in value on the final day of August. Despite investors reducing positions, this positive announcement maintained upward momentum.

The closing session of the month saw the All-Share Index advance 1.20 percent, building on prior sessions' achievements. OMATEK led individual stock performance that day, with TOTAL experiencing the steepest decline.

Market capitalisation rose by N1.91 trillion solely on this final trading day, signaling restored optimism among investors. August's results underscore robust investor engagement across the exchange despite intermittent downturns.

Through eight months, year-to-date turnover reached N6.62 trillion alongside a 56.93 percent return, demonstrating the Nigerian Exchange's capacity to weather market swings through sustained domestic interest combined with the positive effects of upgraded international classification.
