The Nigerian Exchange closed at 238,709.61 points on Wednesday with mixed market sentiment as pharmaceutical and financial stocks drove gains while consumer and agricultural counters faced significant pressure. Trading activity remained robust with ₦30.3 billion in total value across 628.4 million shares, though the divergence between gainers and losers signals investor caution.

Wednesday's NGX session reflected a market pulling in opposite directions, with both top gainers and losers posting double-digit percentage moves—a pattern suggesting selective profit-taking rather than broad-based conviction.

Pharmaceutical stocks led the charge upward. NEIMETH surged 9.66% (₦0.70) to close at ₦7.95, while bond proxies showed strength with LOTUSHAL15 climbing 6.72% (₦7.75) to ₦123.00 and FGSUK2027S3 gaining 6.67% (₦6.00) to ₦96.00. NEM added 6.67% (₦2.00) to ₦32.00, suggesting some rotation into defensive holdings.

However, healthcare suffered a sharp reversal: FIDSON collapsed 9.99% (₦9.35) to ₦84.20, erasing nearly ₦10 per share and signaling selective weakness within the sector. Agricultural counters were hit hard—FTNCOCOA dropped 9.94% (₦0.86) to ₦7.79, while LIVESTOCK fell 9.43% (₦0.75) to ₦7.20, reflecting sector-wide pressure.

Trading remained orderly despite volatility. FTGINSURE dominated volume with 133.9 million shares traded, followed by FIRSTHOLDCO (85.9 million), indicating sustained institutional participation. The market cap of ₦154.2 trillion held relatively steady, though the 46,018 deals executed across 628.4 million shares showed investors remained engaged despite mixed signals.

The divergence between NEIMETH's gains and FIDSON's losses within pharma, combined with broad agricultural weakness, suggests investors are cherry-picking positions rather than embracing sector rotations.
