The Nigerian Exchange closed at 241,089.35 points on Thursday with mixed performance, as selective buying in large-cap stocks offset notable declines in energy and consumer names. Total market value reached ₦23.3 billion across 43,822 deals, signalling cautious investor participation.
Thursday's session painted a tale of divergent market sentiment, with gainers slightly outweighing losers despite significant weakness in key sectors. The ASI settled at 241,089.35 points as investors navigated competing forces between stability seekers and profit-takers.
Large-cap financial stocks led the charge upward. ACCESSCORP surged 5.28% to ₦27.90, climbing ₦1.40, while JAPAULGOLD posted an impressive 9.83% rally to ₦2.57. NSLTECH and LOTUSHAL15 also registered solid gains of 7.94% and 6.44% respectively, suggesting selective appetite for value in the technology and financial services space.
However, the energy sector delivered sharp headwinds. ARADEL cratered 10.00%, shedding ₦157.00 to close at ₦1,413.00—a dramatic move reflecting broad-based energy sector pressure. RTBRISCOE matched this decline at -10.00%, falling ₦0.90 to ₦8.10. Consumer staples also felt the heat, with CHAMPION declining 9.91% and INTBREW dropping 9.80%—both suggesting margin pressures or demand concerns.
Liquidity remained concentrated in defensive plays. FTGINSURE dominated volume with 1.03 billion shares traded, while MBENEFIT and GTCO followed with significant activity. This pattern indicates investors rotating toward counter-cyclical holdings amid broader uncertainty.
The market's mixed close reflects typical mid-quarter consolidation, with large-cap financials providing ballast against sectoral weakness. Investors should monitor whether energy sector stabilises or continues its downward trajectory in the next session.
