NHIA Supports 90,000 Women with Emergency Childbirth Care
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) announced that 90,000 women have benefited from its emergency obstetric care program over the past 18 months. Kelechi Ohiri, the Director-General of NHIA, made this statement during the 2026 Future of Health Conference in Abuja.
The program aims to prevent women with childbirth complications from being denied or delayed treatment due to inability to pay hospital bills. It covers accredited hospitals across all states, with approximately 300 hospitals currently enrolled and more being added.
Ohiri emphasized the necessity of this intervention, noting that it addresses critical gaps in healthcare delivery while broader health insurance coverage is being expanded. He acknowledged that while the program does not eliminate maternal deaths, it aims to reduce the associated human pain.
Additionally, he mentioned that around 6,000 women have received treatment for obstetric fistula through NHIA's intervention, which is supported by other partners.
