NHIA Enhances Cancer Care Support for Nigerian Women

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has called on Nigerian women to prioritize early detection of breast cancer while enhancing financial protection for patients facing high oncology treatment costs. This initiative coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with Nigeria reporting approximately 32,278 new breast cancer cases and 16,332 deaths annually.
The NHIA, led by Director General Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, aims to strengthen health insurance as a financial buffer against serious illnesses. A partnership with Roche will reduce the cost of selected oncology medicines, with Roche covering 50% and NHIA contributing 30%, leaving patients to pay only 20%.
This arrangement alleviates 80% of the medicine cost burden. The NHIA also provides support for radiotherapy and cancer-related diagnostics, including mammography and CT scans.
Ohiri emphasized that the effectiveness of health insurance should be measured by its ability to protect families during expensive illnesses, rather than just enrollment figures. Currently, over 23 million Nigerians are enrolled in the national health insurance system.
